About BMR
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions, such as breathing, circulation, and cell production, while at rest.
BMR is influenced by several factors:
- Age: BMR generally decreases with age
- Gender: Men typically have a higher BMR than women
- Body Composition: Muscle burns more calories than fat
- Genetics: Some people naturally have a higher or lower BMR
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, which is considered one of the most accurate formulas for calculating BMR:
Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age + 5
Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age - 161
