About the Tapping Code

The tapping code is a method of communication used by prisoners of war, most famously in Vietnam. It's based on a 5x5 grid of letters, similar to the Polybius square.

Each letter is represented by two numbers:

  • First number: row (1-5)
  • Second number: column (1-5)

For example, "A" is represented as "1-1" (one tap, pause, one tap), and "B" as "1-2" (one tap, pause, two taps).
